Quick Question Advising
We offer walk-in advising from 1:00 to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
You may come in with a quick question for an international student advisor without making an appointment. Students will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis.
The following topics can be covered during walk-in advising:
- Optional Practical Training (not for intake)
- Taking a leave of absence
- Withdrawing from all classes
- Travel signatures
- Visa renewals
- Grace periods
- Dropping below full-time status
- Urgent financial issues
- Other brief questions
If your inquiry is related to admissions, student and scholar services, or programs and events, contact the appropriate department.
International Student and Scholar Services
You can contact OIS for any reason during normal operating hours. If you should need assistance while the office is closed, see the following instructions.
If You Need a Travel Signature
While we always recommend that you obtain a travel signature before leaving the country, you do have the option of trying to enter the country without one. Most students will be allowed to enter and then be given 30 days to provide additional information. This can be done in person or by mail. Or, if you are overseas for an extended period of time, we can ship an I-20 to you.
If You Have a Medical or Police Emergency
Call 911 immediately. Inform the staff at OIS later.
If You Need Work Authorization
Do not start work without authorization. You will need to postpone your start date until we return and can assist you.
If You Have Been Arrested
OIS cannot bail you out of jail—call your friends or family for that. We can, however, advise you of the potential immigration implications of your arrest and provide you with a list of immigration attorneys. Because court appearances are rarely immediate, this may not be considered an emergency. Please let us know as many details as you can, and we will advise you.
If Your I-20 or DS-2019 is Expiring
This could be an emergency. Please let us know immediately—we will need to take action prior to the expiration date, if possible. If that date has already passed, please wait until the office is open and schedule an urgent appointment. Please check your IU email account for reminders and instructions, and write back to us right away.
