Your life as a student at Indiana University begins with international student orientation.
During orientation, you will get your paperwork in order, take the Indiana English Proficiency Exam, and register for classes. There will also be fun activities that will help you get to know other new international students and start to feel at home at IU.
Temporary arrival housing will be available during orientation. However, if you are planning to live on campus during the academic year, you MUST complete a housing contract as soon as possible. Learn more.
How to Prepare for Orientation
It is extremely important that you create your orientation schedule online before you arrive. This helps us to better plan your orientation activities and make sure we can accommodate all of the students who will be attending the program.
Creating your schedule is easy. Visit iStart and complete your Checklist. About two weeks before orientation starts, click the “Orientation Schedule” tab of your master checklist to create your orientation schedule. Make certain that your arrival dates are correct as shown, because your personalized orientation schedule is based on your arrival dates.
What to Bring to Orientation
We will need a number of documents to facilitate the orientation process. Please bring the following items to Orientation:
- Your orientation schedule
- Your passport
- Your visa stamp
- Your I-94 card
- All original I-20s or DS-2019s (bring documents from previous U.S. schools as well)
- Final, official copies of your academic records and degree certificates or diplomas (these all must bear the stamp or seal of the issuing institution)
All international students – both graduate and undergraduate students – pay an orientation fee. International undergraduate students pay a new student orientation fee and an international undergraduate orientation fee. These fees allow us and other university offices to provide events and programs during orientation and throughout the year. The fee is automatically charged to your Bursar account at the beginning of the semester. You can visit the Office of the Bursar to see the current international student and new student orientation fee rates.
International student orientation is required for all international students, so the international orientation fee is non-refundable and non-negotiable.
