José Méndez

International Student Advisor

José was born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela, and moved to eastern Michigan when he was 17 as a high school exchange student, and then attended Saginaw Valley State University where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Management and Marketing.

Throughout his studies, he was inspired by international program staff leaders and advisors to pursue a career in international education and wanted to help provide other international students with as positive an experience as he had throughout his undergrad years. He was offered the opportunity to join the OIS team at IU in 2016 and made the move from Port Huron, Michigan to Bloomington.

Outside of work, José enjoys staying active by bowling, kayaking, camping, traveling, and serving in cross-cultural missions with his wife.
