You're invited to join your student in Bloomington for orientation this August.
IU has special information sessions and social events for international parents and family members that take place while your student attends orientation.
Attend all or part of the five-day program. More details will be announced soon, but you can make travel arrangements now.
August 12-16
Advance travel planning is important. Check your visa appointment wait times and apply as early as possible.
We want to make this trip as easy as possible! Other items of interest are below.
Most parents will neeed to apply for a Visitor Visa. B-1 and B-2 visas are the most common for this type of travel.
You will need to provide evidence to explain the purpose of your trip, length of stay, and ability to pay all costs of the trip.
Evidence may include one or more of the following
Depending on your home country, you may be eligible for the U.S. Visa Waiver Program and enter as a Waived Tourist.
Please be aware that international students cannot enter the country prior to July 13, and they will not be able to travel with you after orientation.
For immigration reasons, your student needs to arrive in Bloomington no later than August 14. However, we recommend setting an earlier date to accomodate New Student Orientation.
The Indiana Memorial Union is centrally located on campus and will be the easiest option with the least amount of walking.
Visit Bloomington also offers great recommendations for hotels that are close to IU, but off campus.
