Your admission process begins when you apply to IU Bloomington. You can apply as a freshman, transfer, or graduate student.
International freshman admissions
Freshmen students are those who have never attended college or university before. Requirements for freshman applicants include:
- Diploma from an accredited high school
- English language proficiency
- 200-400 word IU specific essay
- Completed IU application—Common Application or Apply IU application, but not both
IU Bloomington will review your application and supplemental materials, paying particular attention to academic performance, grade trends, strength and quality of your high school curriculum, and SAT or ACT scores, if applicable.
Admitted students will be automatically admitted to University Division, but there are direct admission options. You will be notified of an admissions decision via email from the Office of International Services.
International transfer admissions
To apply as a transfer student, you must be currently attending or have previously attended a college or university either in the United States or another country. Transfer student admission is selective, meaning you must demonstrate a solid academic record before applying to IU Bloomington. Application requirements for transfer students include:
- A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5
- English language proficiency
- Completed IU application
IU weighs consistently above average or improving grades heavily in transfer admissions decisions. If you have less than one year of full-time university study or are participating in a dual enrollment program, you need to meet the freshman admission requirements.
International graduate admissions
Graduate applicants can apply to IU Bloomington during the final year of their undergraduate programs or after receiving a United States bachelor’s degree or its recognized equivalent. Graduate admissions are specific to each graduate program, with every department requiring different qualifications and materials. To learn more about what your desired program requires, visit the website of the program.
Graduate students must still meet English language proficiency requirements to attend IU Bloomington.
