When you come to the United States as a student, your primary focus should be your studies. As an F-1 or J-1 student, however, you will also have opportunities to enhance your academic experience with practical training or to work on campus.

When and where you may work depends on your immigration status and where you are in your academic program.

  • F-1 students need authorization for most categories of work.
