Sprintax

Free for IU international students and scholars

Since OIS staff are not qualified or allowed to provide individual tax advice to students or scholars, we team up with Sprintax to make preparing and filing your taxes easy. Sprintax is designed for non-resident alien students and scholars who earned taxable U.S. income in the previous year. You can electronically file your U.S. federal return for free and state return (if necessary) for a standard fee.

Getting Started

To use Sprintax, you will need to use a special code that you can find in Atlas. If you can no longer access Atlas, contact OIS for an individual Sprintax code.

After you log in to Sprintax, you will answer a series of questions about the time you have spent in the U.S. over recent years. Sprintax will then determine your tax status. If Sprintax determines that you are a "nonresident alien" (NRA) for federal tax purposes, you can continue to use the software and respond to a series of guided questions. Sprintax will complete and generate the tax forms you need to send to the IRS.

However, if Sprintax determines that you are a resident alien for federal tax purposes, you won't be able to continue using the software and will need to seek assistance from a different tax profession.

If you need additional help using Sprintax, you can email Sprintax at hello@sprintax.com, watch video guides on the Sprintax YouTube channel, chat with a representative on the Sprintax website, or download a PDF guide using the button below.
